LBGT Resource Center Library

We have quite a few books, magazines, reports, videos and various training materials in the Office. Our book collection is indexed on LibraryThing, which you can browse online.

Recent additions to the Center library

  • Whipping Girl: a Transsexual Woman on Sexism and the Scapegoating of Femininity, by Julia Serano, 2007, Seal Press. This is the one that everyone's talking about!
  • King of Cats: a Life in Five Novellas, by Blake Fraina, 2004, iUniverse. Donated by the author - thanks!
  • Transparent: Love, Family, and Living the T with Transgender Teenagers, Cris Beam, 2007, ISBN 0151011966.
  • Hello Cruel World: 101 Alternatives to Suicide for Teens, Freaks & Other Outlaws, Kate Bornstein (forword by Sara Quin), 2006, ISBN 1583227202.

The following magazines tend to show up in the Center on a regular basis:

  • Advocate - national gay & lesbian newsmagazine
  • Bitch - "feminist response to pop culture"
  • Clamor - "your DIY guide to everyday revolution"
  • Curve - lesbian magazine that's pretty good about being trans inclusive
  • Lesbian Connection - (we receive 5-6 copies of each issue)
  • Other - "pop culture and politics for the new outcast"
  • Shameless - "for girls who get it"

A few of the videos in our collection are:

  • Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin, " the definitive film biography of Bayard Rustin, one of the most controversial figures of the Civil Rights Movement," VHS
  • Hermaphrodites Speak! "meet Angela, David, Heidi, Tom, Mani, Cheryl, Max and Hida as they tell their stories of growing up intersexed," (ISNA) VHS
  • Yellow for Hermaphrodites: Mani's Story, traces the life of the intersex activist Mani Mitchell, from Hermaphrodites Speak! (ISNA) DVD
  • Intersex: Redefining Sex, a half-hour documentary on medical management of children with ambiguous sex anatomy (ISNA) VHS
  • TRANS Generation, "four college students switching more than their majors," DVD

A sampling of other material:

  • A Human Rights Investigation into the Medical "Normalization" of Intersex People, a report of a public hearing by the Human Rights Commission of the City & County of San Francisco
  • The Research Supplement for The Uninvited Dilemma: A Question of Gender, by Kim Elizabeth Stuart
  • Proceedings of the third, fourth and fifth International Conferences on Transgender Law and Employment Policy, 1994, 1995, 1996
  • Teaching Intersex Issues, ISNA speaker's handbook

We're working on ways to show online the rest of the material we have in the Office. You might also want to check out the LibraryThing listing for Lisa's personal library out of which "inter-library loans" can sometimes be arranged.
